Description

We have a website (homelesspartners.com) which allows volunteers to enter the stories of individual homeless people on the site, and people from the public to read the stories and pledge to fulfill their gift requests. The original developer is resigning after 2 years of service, and we have a need for another person(s) to take on the development and support of the website. This is an exciting, grass roots project which began 4 years ago in 1 city and has grown to 9 cities, with plans to eventually run in every major North American city, and possibly beyond. Last year, we had over 44,000 hits and more than 1000 individual homeless people recieved a needed, personal gift at Christmas. The program runs primarily from November through Christmas, so support requirements are heaviest at those times, but the support required is minimal even then (3-4 hours a week). There is some infrequent work required to implement changes and prepare for the program through out the year. Note that as the developer and maintainer of the site, you have a lot of freedom in what you do with the site, so this is a great opportunity to improve your software development skills! You can also post your own advertising on the site as well if you have another business, service, or project you would like to promote.

Requirements

The main requirement is to take ownership of the site, meaning you will fix problems, respond to requests for technical assistance, and make improvements to the site as needed/desired. The web application is currently written in Java, using the Google Web Toolkit, runs on Tomcat/Linux, with a Mysql backend. Experience with those tools is helpful, but you are free to rewrite the application with other tools if you prefer.
