Description

Are you tech savvy? Do you design websites for your friends and their pets? Were you the one to edit your team's movies for 11th grade English projects? Do you enjoy dismantling computers as a hobby? You might be just who we need! We are seeking one or two high-school or older volunteers to help out with our TTechTeam. This is a dynamic, fun, project-based opportunity that is perfect for a high school or college age student with technological flair and the desire to work with youth. So sign out of Facebook, Twitter, AIM, LinkedIn, and MySpace and get in touch with us! POSITION TITLE: TechTeam Genius LOCATION: 790 Columba Rd, Dorchester, MA 02125 TIME REQUIREMENT: 3:00-5:00 every Tuesday afternoon, for a specified number of weeks. PURPOSE: The TechTeam Genius, like the Apple employee of the same name, will bring technological savvy to our TechTeam club. This may take any of three forms: (1) First, the Genius may showcase fun, inspiring, or mindblowing technologies, drawing upon his or her own experience or research. For instance, we have often begun our meetings with a technology video from TED.com. (2) Second, the Genius may take a leading role in carrying a specific project to completion by, for instance, teaching video editing, music mixing, or website design. (3) Third, alongside the Facilitator, the Genuis will help run the weekly meetings, moving around to help individual students and coaching them through projects. RESPONSIBILITIES: The TechTeam Genius position carries the following responsibilities. (1) Arriving on time each week to help set up and discuss plans for the meeting, missing no more than one of the planned weeks, and calling the Facilitator ahead of time if tardiness or absence is unavoidable. (2) Being available through phone or email to briefly discuss upcoming lesson plans. (3) Assisting with gathering needed materials (digital cameras, etc.) (4) Applying his or her technological skills and passing them along to the students. (5) Always maintaining a courteous, friendly, and extremely energetic attitude toward the students. REPORTS TO: The TechTeam Genius reports directly to the TechTeam Facilitator. The Program Director supervises the After School program as a whole. BENEFITS: This is planned to be a win-win situation! Older, tech-savvy volunteers can bring expertise and coolness to our After School program. They, in turn, receive the opportunity to take their own knowledge and implement it. (Remember, it's been said that we remember ninety percent of what we teach!) We are hoping that these volunteers will bring energy and ideas to the discussion table. They will be considered valuable parts of TechTeam: their advice and ideas will be taken seriously, refined, and implemented. By the end, the volunteer will have some kind of technological project to show for his or her efforts—in addition to the more ethereal benefits of service, leadership, teaching, and fun! WHAT WE'RE DOING RIGHT NOW: Our students have just pulled together some of their top ideas for technology projects. We have several live projects, but others will surely be on the way. Here's what we're working on at the moment. (1) Write a PowerPoint presentation on a favorite animal. (2) Create a new music video to a favorite song (3) Design a class website or blog (4) Film a movie through stop-motion animation. CONTACT: Further questions about this volunteer opportunity should be directed to the TechTeam Facilitator, Christopher Hampson. He is reachable by phone at 617.984.9923 or through email (preferred) at chris.hampson@popejp2catholicacademy.org.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: The following qualifications and personal characteristics are recommended. (1) High-school or college age (preferably in 11th grade or higher). (2) Responsible, dependable, patient, well-tempered, able to teach students and keep them on track. Discipline will be handled by staff. (3) A developed understanding of computers, the Internet, and other technologies, with at least one or two "areas of expertise" that could be developed into fun projects for students in 4th to 8th grade. (4) Maturity with respect to the vast world of the Internet. COMMITMENT EXPECTED: The TechTeam Genius is expected to commit to a weekly schedule for six to eight school weeks, for two hours a week. This is sufficient time to begin a project and carry it to completion. After six weeks, the time commitment can be re-evaluated and, if interested, the volunteer may be invited to commit for a longer period of time. SUPPORT: Every week, the TechTeam Genius will meet with the Facilitator fifteen minutes before the TechTeam meets for training and planning purposes. Ideas and plans will be shared and discussed. At this time, he or she will receive feedback, ideas, and support from the Facilitator regarding the teaching and coordination of middle school students. The Genius will file a CORI with the school on the first day of service, participate in weekly discussions concerning his or her satisfaction with the position, and fill out a survey upon departure. DRESS CODE: Pope John Paul students wear a uniform (slacks and polos for the young men, kilts and polos for the young women). Because of this, we ask our volunteers to dress accordingly (with the same heart). No specific dress code is required, but volunteers should aim for modesty and professionalism.
