Description

Against the Grain offers in-school tutoring to the children of the single mothers in the 180 Program. The coordinator for the Study Buddy Program serves as the liaison between the tutors, teachers, and school administrators. Responsibilities include meeting with teachers and/or administrators at the beginning of the school year to determine the needs of each child, and how the Study Buddy Program can help meet the academic goals for each child. The coordinator will train the tutors and orient them to the specific needs of their student. Throughout the year, the Program Coordinator will communicate with the tutors and the teachers to determine the on-going needs and successes of each student. The Program Coordinator will maintain data throughout the year that enables the Executive Director to understand the academic situation of each child and communicate to the mothers and their mentors how to best support their child's academic experience. Preferred Skills: • Experience in Elementary Education: The Coordinator for the Study Buddy Program must be able to communicate with elementary school teachers and administrators regarding strategies for meeting the needs of at-risk children. An understanding of common teaching methods is necessary for reaching students performing below grade-level standards. • Teaching and Training: The Study Buddy Program Coordinator must not only understand common teaching methods used in elementary school classrooms, he/she must be able to train tutors to understand how to reach students who may not respond to traditional approaches. The Coordinator is responsible for communicating strategies that may be incorporated into the tutoring sessions. • Administration/ Time Management: The Coordinator is responsible for keeping records and must be able to use MS Word and Excel. The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that initial student assessments, teacher meetings, and tutor orientations occur in a timely manner at the beginning of the school year. Follow-up reviews on student progress must also be done in a timely manner after every 9-week grading cycle.

Requirements

All volunteers must complete a Volunteer Application, pass a background check, and complete Volunteer Training. All Program Coordinators will also be required to attend team leader meetings.
