Christian volunteers are welcomed and needed to come and help at our street kids project in Mombasa, Kenya. The boys are all aged between 7 and 18 and have just recently come off the streets to change their lives and return into mainstream education and gain skills. Volunteers assist with informal classes to gently help the boys back into a love of learning and develop a Christian faith through gentle positive encouragement and simple learning activities. In the afternoons volunteers encourage outdoor games and can support the social workers visiting street children on the streets of Mombasa. Ideally local volunteers will be able to assist for 4 weeks minimum term to enable the boys to benefit. Volunteers will be also working alongside international volunteers who visit for between 1 and 2 weeks and will be expected to support them through sharing cultures and assisting them in their new role. This is a Roman Catholic charity organisation but all volunteers with a sympathetic understanding of the Christian faith and principles are extremely welcome. Volunteers should be at least 18 although preference will be given to volunteers with experience due to the nature of the position with vulnerable ex-street children. Accommodation may be provided although it will be expected that most volunteers can make their own way from home each day. Training and supervision is provided by the experienced project staff who are all practising Roman Catholics. Working hours are part time, usually 4 hours a day late morning to mid afternoon although there are additional opportunities for practising Christians and those interested to offer additional pastoral care. Volunteers should arrive each day with some ideas for maths and numeracy activities.
