Description

Youths in Action started in January 2005 as a self-help group when six youths from Mpeketoni, Lamu district, Coast province in Kenya, East Africa, studying in various institutions of higher learning could not bear with prevalence of drugs & substance abuse in schools, girls drop out due to impregnation & prostitution while only two to three students attained minimum grades to university admission. The youths called upon interested youngsters to join for the cause to help the community. Fifteen members registered the group as a self-help organization. The group did savings, started shot-term income generating projects, helped members in times of need and merry-go-round. Due to diversity of community needs and demand to scale up services, the group resolved to extend their services to other communities. On 23rd February 2009, Youths in Action was registered as a non-profit organization under Societies Act of Kenya. In this regard, the organization initiated long-term projects to sensitize the community on the scourge as well as uplift lives of the people. This process of growth has strengthened the group as well as capacity built members on all corners of lives. Youths in Action is has offices in Mpeketoni, Malindi, Mombasa and Nairobi and operates in Kenya, Uganda (Jinja and Kampala), Sudan (Juba) and Tanzania (Mwanza). The organization is run by young talented volunteers from diverse fields of professions through members‚‚’ donations and community resource mobilization. The organization implements two major programs: Smart Project and volunteer placement. Smart project is an organizational project run by volunteers with its aim to sensitize youths in schools on behaviour change and career success. Volunteer placement program recruits international volunteers to work with Smart project staff or teach in schools, help in children homes, health centres or with our partners. Youths in Action is working with 75 local volunteers, 12 international volunteers, 7 ambassadors, 23 primary and secondary schools, 6 health centres, line ministries and a number of local and international organizations including but not limited to Red Cross Society, International Book Club, Idealist, Volunteer Match, Do Something, LICAS Kenya and Pandora Box. We believe in working with the community to help others, and the future generation. We facilitate change, people change themselves. We believe you are part of us, that is why you are here with us. We know you can do it if you believe you can. If you would like to volunteer, partner, commit yourself, work with us or link with us, do not hesitate Contact Us now.
