Mission Statement

Mission We continually make a significant difference in the lives of the exotic birds entrusted to our care as well as fulfill to full to capacity the mission set forth in our bylaws, strengthen the weak areas of our operation and expand operation not to exceed beyond our means as well as implementing a strategic plan intended to meet all programmatic, organizational, operational, and community efforts. Vision Our vision is to become accredited by the American Sanctuary Association and, through our demonstrated excellence of care, play a leadership role in our community and state in promoting the socially, morally, and ethically responsible treatment of exotic birds. To achieve our mission and fulfill our vision, we defined our goals and strategic priorities. Key to our success obviously is collaboration between our staff, individual volunteers, and organizations both within and beyond our local community, all working in unity to safeguard the lives of exotic birds and give them a better-quality life. What We Do As unpaid guardians of surrendered birds, Under My Wing Avian Refuge serves the needs of a small portion of the thousands of exotic birds worldwide that have been abandoned, abused, neglected, and/or emotionally scarred for life. Here at the refuge, many of our birds are physically or behaviorally challenged, sick, or aged. Quite a few have come from loving homes where the owners died or for some reason could no longer provide for their bird; others were rescued from abusive or uncaring owners by Animal Control officers. At Under My Wing Avian Refuge, our birds live in a safe, comfortable, loving, and mentally enriching environment, with many developing trusting and often playful relationships with staff members and volunteers. We provide them with a healthy diet and proper avian veterinary care. Additionally, we provide hospice care for the terminally ill, and comfort (palliative) care for the physically challenged. This high standard of care assures the best possible quality of life for all the birds at our sanctuary. Our "Do's" •Intake and Adoptions •Aid in rescue and rehabilitation •Accommodate lost/found •Collaborative Activities •Specific Placement Parrot Rescue Transfers •Safeguard all endangered exotic birds •Education Our "Don’ts" •Exploit or use of birds for commercial or entertainment purpose •Handle adoption of birds for hobby purpose or breeding •Take part in consignment, sale, trade, barter or breed birds
