As a nonprofit humanitarian organization, Fundacion Ni±ez Internacional strives to help children around
the world overcome the burdens of poverty to become healthy, educated, self-sustaining and contributing members
of society.
This goal is achieved primarily through child sponsorship, which unites children in need with individual
sponsors who wish to address the childrens immediate and basic needs, and gives them the tools and opportunities
necessary for success. In addition to sponsorship, Fundacion Ni±ez Internacional works to further improve
the living conditions of children and families living in poverty. Through projects such as latrine building,
clean-water initiatives and income-generation programs, we help families live healthier and
Fundacion Ni±ez Internacional in Ecuador offers direct sponsorship to over 53,000 children in Ecuador;
20,000 of which are living in poor neighbourhoods in Quito. Sponsored children in Quito are served through
community centers in 5 different neighbourhoods which offer health and dental care as well as educational support
services.
Volunteers can assist by doing the following tasks;
Volunteers at the Medical/Dental clinics are asked to assist the doctors and dentists in their routine
check-ups and tasks. Volunteers usually spend at least half of the day working side-by-side with the doctors, weighing
patients, doing eye exams, helping to administer medicine and be a support for the children and their families
that come to the centers. The other half of the day is often spent helping to archive patient information, and
to prepare patient folders and information for the coming day. Volunteers at this clinic receive excellent
practical experience in how a well managed clinic is run, are able to see the daily tasks and the energy involved
in administering such a medical center, as well as interact with people who would otherwise never recieve these
kinds of services. Volunteers at the medical clinic in the past have helped with English classes after the
doctors are finished for the day (2:30pm) and volunteers are also welcome to help out with sexual education
workshops for young people on the weekends (often seen as a taboo subject here).
