Mission Statement

Neighborhood House Association's mission is to address basic needs, enhance individual and family life and improve neighborhoods and communities.

Description

NHA has been serving the community of Lorain since 1927. Created primarily to address the growing needs of carious immigrant groups who settled in Lorain for employment opportunities, families received assistance to assimilate to their new language and country. NHA has always played a vital role in the framework of Lorain County. Today, NHA’s mission continues to address a person’s basic needs, enhance individual and family life, and improve neighborhoods and communities. NHA is instrumental in the advancement of families through a variety of programs such as: prenatal to preteen programs, senior nutrition, education, and activities, and emergency shelter and homeless programs. All programs are designed to aid and improve the quality of life to all who seek assistance. NHA has become an indispensable resource to the thousands of unheard voices of the disadvantaged and underserved men, women, and children of Lorain County. Programs include: Haven Center Emergency Homeless Shelter, Two Licensed Child Day Care Centers that are Star Rated by the State of Oho which provides full service for 6 weeks to 12 years of age. Preschool, After School Program, Summer Camp, Help Me Grow, Senior Nutrition (Home Delivered, and PASSPORT meals), Socialization and Supportive Services for the elderly, Housekeeping and Minor Repair Program for the elderly. The Haven Center is the only 24/7 year-round homeless shelter in Lorain County that provides an extended stay for men, women and children while families are working toward getting back into permanent housing, employment and transitioning back into self sufficiency in society. We are seeing more intact family units coming to the Haven Center seeking shelter due to the increase in unemployment. Also, an increase in families being removed from homes that their landlord’s property has been foreclosed.
