Mission Statement
Mission Year is a radical program focused on empowering Christian young people (single or married) to live out the simplest and most important commandment of Jesus: "Love the Lord your God, and love your neighbor as yourself." By living and working for a year in a low-income, urban neighborhood, partnering with a local church, volunteering at a social service agency, and spending time with neighbors, our Mission Year team members effectively impact their communities while catching a deeper vision for what the Kingdom of God is like.
Description
These are our values and how we encourage our team members to live these out: RELATIONSHIPS: Building deep relationships based on trust and respect with your neighbors, seeking practical ways to show Christian love. COMMUNITY LIVING: Sharing life in community with a supportive team of other Christians in an urban neighborhood. COMMUNITY SERVICE: Volunteering 25-30 hours a week at a social service agency that's providing vital resources to the poor. DISCIPLESHIP: Drawing close to God by spending time deepening your own walk with Christ and developing spiritual disciplines. CHURCH PARTNERSHIP: Supporting God's work in the city by partnering with a dynamic local church that's engaging the community. SOCIAL JUSTICE: Seeking justice by learning to identify disparities in power and working creatively to bring resolution. SIMPLICITY: Living life without excess to better care for your neighbors and the environment around you.
Organizational Statement of Faith
We are Jesus-centered in our theology and practice. (John 12:32) We believe in an incarnational and relational approach to ministry. (John 1; Phil. 2:5-7) We value the ethnic and cultural differences of the body of Christ. (Col. 3-11; Rev. 7:9) We believe that Christ calls us to put others before ourselves. Therefore, we put the interests of our neighbors and our brothers and sisters in ministry before your own. (Matt. 6:33; Phil. 2:3-4) We respect and partner with indigenous people, churches, organizations and neighborhoods. (Gen. 1:26-27) We seek to do justice and love mercy because of Jesus' special concern for the poor and oppressed. (Micah 6:8, Deut. 10:17-19; Deut. 15; Isaiah 58; Luke 4:14-21; James 1:27) We subscribe to both the Nicene Creed and the Apostles' Creed (which can be found here http://missionyear.org/beliefs/).
