Mission Statement

The Literacy Council exists to provide literacy instruction to individuals and families to strengthen communities. We do this regardless of means or ability to pay, to improve quality of life for individuals, and to advocate for literacy awareness and services.

Description

The Literacy Council was founded to help adults learn to read in a one-on-one learning environment. True to our roots, our one-on-one tutoring program is our top priority here at The Council, and we exist to help adults make the journey from lower to higher level reading skills. We match tutors with both basic readers and people from other countries who seek to improve English skills. We offer Reading, Math, and Computer classes at our main office. We offer ESL classes in local churches in Rockford and at ALERTA in Belvidere. We sponsor Family Literacy teachers who pass out books to children at Crusader clinic and also teach parents how to teach children how to read. The Literacy Council is supported by state and federal dollars, The United Way, private donors, and also two yearly events (The Literacy Run and 100 Men Who Cook.)
