Mission Statement

Cornerstone is a co-educational, independent Christian school offering a full academic program for Kindergarten through 8th grade that has served Southwest Philadelphia since 1988. Our mission is to educate the children of Southwest Philadelphia, including those from at-risk neighborhoods, in an environment that provides the highest standards for academic achievement and spiritual development.

Description

Cornerstone's roots lie in the compassion and dedication of Christians throughout the Philadelphia region. In response to the 1980 Philadelphia teachers strike and subsequent distress in Philadelphia schools, attorney James Sweet and evangelist Tony Campolo began investing themselves in the lives of children in Southwest Philadelphia. By 1988 Cornerstone Christian Academy was born with 40 children, kindergarten to third grade. Located in the heart of southwest Philadelphia at 58th Street and Kingsessing Avenue, Cornerstone has since grown to over 200 kindergarten to eighth grade students, 16 teachers and an annual operating budget of $1.5 million. Cornerstone is a co-educational, independent Christian school offering a full academic program for its students.

Organizational Statement of Faith

We believe that the Bible, comprised of the Old and New Testaments, is inspired by God and is the supreme and final authority in faith and life (2 Timothy 3:16, 1 Thessalonians 2:13, Matthew 4:4-10). We believe in one God existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). We believe in the vicarious death of the Lord Jesus Christ for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3, Ephesians 1:7), the resurrection of His body (1 Corinthians 15:4, 12-19), His ascension into Heaven (Mark 16:19, Acts 1:9), and His future return to the earth (Acts 1:11, 1 Thessalonians 5:2). We believe salvation is available through one’s acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior (Romans 1:16). We believe that a New Testament Church is a body of baptized believers associated for worship, learning, service, and the spread of the gospel for the establishment of the Kingdom of God on earth (Acts 2:42-47, Matthew 28:19-20).
