Mission Statement

To save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.

Description

The American Lung Association was founded in 1904 to fight tuberculosis. Today, through supportive educational programs, advocacy and research, we impact the lives of those living with all types of lung disease, including asthma, emphysema and lung cancer. Together-our volunteers, donors and staff-we have the power to change the way we live and breathe. The Lung Association has targeted programs and services addressing asthma and other lung disease, tobacco control, environmental health, research, professional education and patient services. The American Lung Association of Florida influenced landmark federal laws, such as the Clean Air Act and the law prohibiting smoking on domestic passenger airline flights. The Lung Association led the way for the passage of constitutional amendment banning smoking in most Florida workplaces, including restaurants. More recently, the Lung Association worked to pass laws that guarantee students with asthma the right to have immediate access to life saving medications.
